Center / Stage
Holding center for connected leadership
Since my earliest memories, I needed to be on stage.
I saw stages everywhere: the dining room table with the sliding door to the living room. A wooden platform between houses at our vacation rental. A “Cruise America” van in a trailer park in Utah. Every party I ever went to.“Sure, I can come to your (friendsgiving, bachelorette weekend, picnic), but can I be the entertainment?” I was more comfortable being on stage than being part of.
When performing, I controlled the energy of the room, shaping and siphoning it. It’s as if my gravitational core was dispersed. I was seeking center- control and energy- from the whole, wide world. My then-best friend unmasked me in a cruel way: “Don’t you know everyone says it’s always ‘The Lucia Show?’”
Then, a shift happened. I won’t go into the how, only the knowing now. My center is inside me. I’m real alone. I’m alive watching. There’s gravity to it. After the shift, I thought, “I might never need to be on stage again.” “Need” being the operative word. I find joy and meaning and transcendence through comedy and acting and speaking. But my center is inside, where she belongs.
Holding Center for Connected Leadership
As a connected leader, there are moments you need to take center (present), moments you need to stand along side (coach), and moments you need to sit down (observe). These three distinct and interconnected roles—presenter, coach, and observer—are practiced in every Success Circles peer coaching session. In each ninety-minute monthly session, Circlers rotate through presenting (or being coached), coaching, and observing the process. Each role is a leadership masterclass in its own right. Ultimately, Circlers incorporate these roles for dynamic, connected leadership. As Circlers learn to hold their gravitational center, they’re freed to show up however the moment calls.
