Who Can You Share Dreams With?

This weekend I watched the Disney movie "Wish” with my six-year-old nephew two times in a row. We just had to.

In it, the people are born with one wish in their hearts, unique to them. These wishes are the most beautiful part of them. The king, Magnifico, takes the wishes to keep them safe. They are held in fragile blue orbs, which are "very beautiful, but very locked up,” as our heroine Asha puts it. He grants one a year. The people forget them when they give them. They’re grateful and well behaved. They will never know their wish or the sense of meaning derived from pursuing it.

After our second viewing, Auntie Too Much Screen Time arrived. I thought of an idea for us. We drew out our wishes. We gave ourselves a few, because Disney can’t get everything right. His mostly involved cakes and money. They were beautiful.

Looking at my big blue bubbles of what I most want for my life, I immediately felt their preciousness. I wanted to look at them every day but also hide them deep in my overnight bag, “very locked up.” I would only share them with those I trusted with them.

Who can you share dreams with?

Sometimes even the people we love most cannot be trusted with them. On the deepest level, hope reveals where others feel hopeless. There is no truer heartbreak than hopelessness. Rather than feel this, they may negate, belittle, doubt, or break up with you. Despite trying, these people are incapable of holding your dreams.

Dreams must be shared in order to live.

In a community of encouragement, we breathe vitality into one another's visions. Our precious orbs become less fragile, less locked away. We're fortified to bring forth what is most beautiful in us.
