If I stop caring about what doesn't matter, what will I do?

Next Level Leader,

I'm writing to you from the Camino de Santiago, a 500 mile pilgrimage across Spain. 176 miles in, I’ve crossed rivers, poppy fields, vineyards, forests, cobblestones, and highways. I’ve drank countless cafe con leches, made friends across generations and continents, slept in villas and bunk beds, sat in churches and on hilltops. I’ve realized the secret to happiness is sore legs. I’ve Zoomed-in with many of you for coaching sessions! I’ve carried everything on my back and felt lighter than ever.

And, a few tens of miles back, fear struck. “If I truly stop caring about what doesn’t matter, what will I do?" Anything at all? Many of us are realizing what doesn't matter. It might be the very marker of success that a few miles back meant everything. Many are walking with this same fear. When an old motivator falls away, will we find a deeper one?

Question: If I stop caring about what doesn't matter, what will I do? Answer: Good.

We will do good. We will give for a bigger why. We will be brave, as what does not matter can not stop us. We will be freed to live our values, and in this way, we will be liberated to lead.

Journal prompt: What do you now know does not matter? How's this liberating you?  What good can you do?

There’s another fear on the heels of this one. If you value connection—and I know this community does—it's big. As what matters changes and we make new choices, will we be alone? Who's coming with us?

The truth is we will lose connections. And, we will make unshakable ones. As we live our values, we're drawn to people who share them. Here, we experience true kinship, real belonging, marked by the absence of the need for conformity. This is how it is with my fellow pilgrims. You'd never know what connects us by looking at the surface. It's our openness to life.

Today, I’m nursing a sore foot in Burgos. As I watch pilgrims pack up and take off, I know I’m with them. Connected by values, we're always walking together.

Be with me every step of the way by tuning into Listen to Lead: Notes from the Camino de Santiago. Episodes 1 (days 1-2) and 2 (days 3-10) are up now!
